Curriculum

Guiding Principles

  • Under assumptions of objectivity, Western or Eurocentric notions of research have created knowledge privileging the dominant population and formulated practices causing harm to culturally diverse populations.

  • Researchers have imposed White middle-class notions of normalcy upon Black and other culturally diverse people.

  • Contemporary research typically appropriates non-Western and mainly benefits the researcher.

  • Skilled researchers place individuals’ values at the center of inquiry.

  • What is needed is authentic or sufficient application of cultural mores as they relate to research design, associated protocols, or analysis.

Emancipatory Research should:

  • reflect the voices of those under investigation

  • reveal the situated perspective of the researcher

  • incorporate transformation as part of the research experience.
